Engineering Officer

Lt. Commander Robert Hewson is an Engineering Officer and a member of the engineering branch. He is responsible for overseeing the vessel's power generation equipment including the fusion reactors which will provide the vast majority of the vessel's power, as well as the Power Distribution Network which allocates and distributes power to all other vessel systems. Because of his focus on these systems, Hewson is referred to as the Generation Officer.

As needed by mission requirements Commander Hewson will co-ordinate with the bridge (or during alert conditions  be on the bridge himself) to ensure that power allocation is constantly optimised to ensure that the Conn's requirements can be implemented, or to advise on options where insufficient power is available. During combat Hewson may need to manage allocation of emergency power or the routing of power around damaged areas of the vessel.

During assigned watches Hewson will oversee maintenance of the reactor and other major generation systems and will develop plans for routine maintenance to be carried out by his team while he is off watch. He will also draft power allocations procedures for routine mission requirements that take place while he is off watch.

What Would I Be Doing?

Interested in Commander Hewson's role as an Enginerring Officer?

Once you've completed training you'll be able to gain more experience by joining simulator missions chosen from a growing library of tactical, exploratory, scientific and diplomatic scenarios.

As an engineering officer on these misisons you may be assisted by crew engineering specialists elsewhere on the vessel, but engineering officers are expected to have competency to manage all engineering systems:

Generation

This is the focus of Hewson's current role and as described above it involves the management of power generation and distribution systems, including the allocation of power between vessel systems.

Propulsion

The vessel's main propulsion is provided by Magnetoplasma Impulse Engines (MIEs) which allow significant sublight speeds to be reached for maneuvering within star systems. The MIEs can be used in conjunction with an alien-derived superluminal drive system which provides speeds multiple times the speed of light for travel between star systems.

As an engineering officer you'll need to ensure these systems are operating nominally and repair any damage sustained during mission or combat operations.

Core Systems

The vessel's core systems are responsible for mantaining the crew's living environment. This includes maintenance of atmospheric conditions and artificial gravity, which as well as keeping the crew's feet on the deck also provides inertial dampening to compensate for the otherwise fatal forces exerted on the crew by the vessel's maneuvers at high velocities.

Spaceframe

The vessel's superstructure is referred to as the spaceframe - effectively an armoured shell within which the crew and all other vessel systems operate. Maintaining the structural integrity of the spaceframe during high-impact mission or combat operations is vital to the survival of the vessel.

Becoming an Engineering Officer

To join the mission you'll need to sign up as crew, which gives you access to online training at the Academy including the simulator facility.

To become an engineering officer you'll complete training on engineering systems. As you becomed 'rated' on each system you'll be able to operate that system in the simulator during missions.

Once you've logged the required mission hours operating those systems, you'll qualify as an engineering officer.

Your profile will display which systems you're rated on, as well as show your current rank and qualification insignia.

From there how your career develops is up to you. As you complete more missions and gain experience you'll increase in rank and will be able to tackle more complex and demanding misisons.
